The Maha Mrityunjay pooja is performed for Lord Shiva to protect the person suffering from the illness or to avoid untimely death. Along with the Gayatri mantra it holds the highest place among the many mantras used for contemplation and meditation. The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is hailed by the sages as the heart of the Veda. It is also known as the Rudra mantra, Tryambakam mantra and Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because it has a component of the “life-restoring” and potency to give protection with manifold blessings. It is related with Shiva, the destroyer of ignorance, and the liberator from the cycle of death and rebirth.
